Moving box labels with QR codes: know what’s in every box
Updated October 2026 · 5 min read
The classic moving-day question is not “where is the sofa?” but “which of these thirty boxes has the kettle?”. Writing “KITCHEN” on every box doesn’t answer it. A small labelling system does.
What goes on the outside
- A short code (K7M, R3T…) in big letters on two sides and the top, so you can read it in a stack.
- The destination room at the new place, not the room it came from.
- A priority mark for boxes you need on the first night.
- A QR code that opens the list of what’s inside. You scan instead of opening and digging.
What goes on the list
Not every fork. List what you might look for: “kettle, mugs ×4, tea, coffee”. Five to ten lines per box is plenty. Add the list while packing, the box is open in front of you and it takes seconds.
The first-night box
Pack one or two boxes you open first: chargers, toilet paper, toothbrushes, towels, a kettle and mugs, medicines, a few tools, bedding for each bed, snacks. Mark them clearly and load them last so they come out first.
Unpacking in the right order
- Stack boxes by destination room as they come in.
- Open first-night boxes, then kitchen and bathroom.
- When you unpack, move items to where they will live, and note the new place if you’ll ever look for it again (passports, warranties, spare cables).
How Roomind helps
Roomind has a moving mode: each box gets a code, a destination room and its contents, and you can search “kettle” to find the box. With Roomind Pro you can print QR labels on A4 sheets; scanning a label opens that box on any phone in your household. Searching, rooms and sharing the move with your family are free.
